District would like to continue participating in KIDS Read Now Program

Every student looks forward to summer break and deserves to enjoy their time off; however, it is important for children to continue learning over the summer months.

To encourage this, the Black River Elementary School would like to plan a fun, in-home summer reading program for its 300 students this year in grades K-3 call the Kids Read Now program. The Kids program is committed to eliminating the summer reading slide that so often occurs when students are away from school for several months. Kids Read Now focuses on providing high quality, research-based programming where students choose books they want to read from a list of possible selections and then read those selections over the summer. Each time a book is completed, students are then mailed the next title from their list.  Students who complete the Kids Read Now program will receive a prize from the company in the early fall.

To implement the Kids Read Now program, Black River plans to recruit and train high school mentors who will encourage their elementary mentees to continue their reading throughout the summer. The mentors will discuss the books with their mentees and assure that students are logged into the Kids Read Now system so that they can continue receiving additional titles.

Our goal is to provide this program free of charge to all interested elementary students, as such, we are seeking businesses or individuals who would like to make a donation to this project. The goal is to raise at least $9,000 in order to include as many students as possible.  Last year this program was free as a promotion.

Those interested in donating or sponsoring a child, or children, at $30.00 each, should contact the district’s curriculum director, Jill Holland Beiser at 419-736-3300 or jbeiser@blrv.org.

We appreciate any and all donations to this program as it will encourage and improve our youngest students’ love of reading,
