First grade is focused on building foundational skills in reading, writing and math. Reading and writing are life skills that override all content areas and is the core of first grade. We work to build a balanced literacy program that includes phonics, guided reading, poetry, writing and vocabulary development. This all works together to give students a strong foundation to build on for the rest of their school career. In math, our main goals are adding, subtracting and building number sense to 120. We integrate science and social studies to help build a foundation for the students to build on in the upper grades. We also continue to work on appropriate social skills to make a well-rounded school citizen.
